Melonpaw shuffled through the grass along the bank. The mud squished between his sheathed claws. The light streamed from the horizon and skipped across the river's tiny ripples, and with each skip it reflected his image onto the water's surface for all to see, like an artist in the pride of completion.

He closed his eyes, running across the border of wet and dry. Prey dashed from his blissful path. The pads of his paws crushed the dirt beneath him, leaving elongated prints in the mud, and pushed the stones into the earth. He was gliding across the air, engulfed in the feeling of the cool breeze.

His paw slipped, and the mud sucked his limb into the mud. His eyes flashed open, and he got a glance at his fearful expression in the heavily rippling stream. Melonpaw let out a whelp as the water dragged him down.

moonshade padded close by a place covered in mud. a warm breeze ruffled her fur, making her purr. she let her mind run wild for a moment. she closed her eyes, suddenly falling into a warm sleep. imges flashed by her eyes. her clan, under her. Cheering, healthy and warm. Moonshade purred and yowled, "Riverclan thrives!" as if yelling it at a gathering. As if time itself had stopped cats froze. moonshade swung her head around desperately. the air turned cold. cats started to thin, and one by one they started to disapear. until the last cat remained. it padded toward moonshade meowing its last words, "dont ignore a sign of weakness." then it started to slowly fade. "Wait!" i yowled, "What does that mean?!!? please tell me more!!" but the cat just disapeared.

Moonshade woke with a jolt. she heard a desperate whelp called out. Moonshade jumped up and ran toward the whelp. there, in the water was melonpaw. "Hold on, keep you eyes and nose above!" Moonshade took a hold into melonpaw's scruff. she scrunched up her muscles and pulled the cat out.

Moonpaw spat and sputtered, keeping his eyes closed to the water. He felt the ground brush up against his leg, and gasped for air. He clawed at the ground, and when contently secure, he looked up to his rescuer. He was relieved to see the Riverclan Warrior standing over him.

"Moonshade." He bowed to the warrior. "Sorry for troubling you. I am in your debt..."

[Moonzzz]

"nonesense melonpaw!" moonshade meowed cheerfully, "im always happy to help!" chuckling moonshade meowed, "my only question is what are you doing here?" she smelled the air she didnt smell any prey nearby, but melonpaw could have just scared everything with his whelping.

moonshades dream still remained in her head. what did that old cat mean?

"I..." Prey scent. There was none. It had been all around him when he arrived. He gave a wheezing sigh. "I was looking for prey, or at least I was supposed to. But I got side tracked... It's just so beautiful today, don't you think?"

He messed up this time. He didn't want to imagine the trouble he would be in if he didn't come back with prey. It was bad enough that he forgot to come back with something last time he went hunting. He looked to the water. Thanks to him falling in, there weren't any fish either.

"Moonshade-" He began to plead. "Would you be so kind as to help me find prey? I...I can't go back to camp without it!"

[Moonzzz]

"of course Melonpaw! im not an upstuck senior warrior...yet" moonshade chuckled. he was being silly. lucky for him he caught her on her good side today. "melonpaw, from the scent and sound of it, the prey probably ran toward the north. so lets head that way." moonshade raised her tail in the air and trotted north way. "it is quite a good day. i totally understand why you would have gotten sidetracked..." moonshade let the warm breeze ruffle her fur. her eyes hurt though. all becuase of the flashes of light that had appeared in moonshade's dream. She shook it off

Melonpaw bowed deeply. "Thank you ever so much!"

He began to stalk upstream, following the northern sky. He kept his nose high in the air, searching the downwinds. He kept close to Moonshade, figuring that the warrior would sense the prey before he did.

"I always love days like this." He mewed dreamily. "There's a certain...grace to them."

[Moonzzz]

"yes," moonshade replied, scenting a water vole she crouched down, "especially when prey comes right under your nose" moonshade leaped, pouncing on the fat vole. she stalked back over to melonpaw. "Well this is promising!" she meowed.
she scented a mouse a little down stream, she flicked her tail. letting melonpaw know it was his catch.
"Dont worry, " Moonshade meowed. "I only scented the vole first because im ahead of you. she moved to the side. Melonpaw's turn.

He nodded, and crouched, letting his senses take reign for the brief moment. The scent of the mouse smacked him in the nose, and he grinned. He followed the scent upwind, to where the little rodent stood. He crept up behind it, and bringing his lessons to mind- he pounced with one liquid movement.

The mouse started to scrape against the ground to flee as his shadow came over, but its paws were stuck in the mud. Melonpaw snatched it up in it's jaws, splashing mud and water up his legs. He turned to Moonshade and smiled.

grinning moonshade meowed, "the clan will eat well. that was a bit messy. but what is is what is." moonshade gazed at the young cat. he had a lot of potential. looking at the sun rising up she meowed, "cats should be getting up now, lets get this prey back to camp okay? we can hunt on the way."

Melonpaw nodded enthusiastically. Although he didn't want to leave the stream, he had to get back. He was still wet from the fall, but hopefully the sun would dry him up a bit. At least he had something to bring home.

He eagerly awaited the moon he would become a warrior. That would be the day. He tried to dream of his new name- anything but Melonface. He laughed to himself and kept by Moonshade's flank. He was going to be a good warrior one day. That was a promise.

moonshade picked up her pace. she needed some sleep! maybe she will find uot more during her dream tonight! she couldnt get her mind of being deputy! their leader would have to decide soon, and moonshade REALLY wanted to become deputy, maybe leader someday. but she knows there are better cats more qualified for the job. she was just barely over the minimum age group for deputys by a couple moons. "melonpaw," she meowed, "have you ever felt sort of ambicous, as if wanting just to be...better?"
moonshade knew it was a silly question! of course he would want to be a warrior someday, "meaning like deputy, or leader?"
moonshade stared at the fading stars, bidding the a silent goodbye. Moonshade sometimes had dreams about the stars fading and never coming back.

Melonpaw looked up at Moonshade, a little confused. "No. Why?"

He looked up to the dawning morning. He loved the colours that the clouds took on at this time of day. He eyed the horizon, admiring it. He thanked Starclan for being able to see something like this every morning.

[Moonzzz]

"oh no reason. just...just wondering.." moonshade meowed. 'great' she thought to herself 'no i know its not just some childhood ambicions catching up to me!'
sighing she looked over toward the sunrise. she purred. her ambicions could never take away that sunset.
