Rosethorn's tummy grumbled in protest as she followed the stream that led to the moonpool, she hadn't eaten in a while, but the traveling herbs she had eaten before she had left were pushing her on wards. She stopped t the entrance to the moonpool, she said a silent prayed for poor Ashstar and dipped her head before making her way slowly forward. Her steps were hesitant and she wasn't sure what she would be facing in her dream, she had always wondered how cats received their nine lives, she was about to find out. Padding down to the side of the moonpool she kept her steps as slow, she was panicking inside and her heart was pounding as if it was about to break out of her chest. She stood there, staring at the silver pool before her, it was a while before she finally took a step forward to drink from the pool. Bending her head down, her tongue touched the water and she flinched away, but it had left her wanting more. Letting out a deep breath she took a proper drink from the pool and began to sink into her dream.
When she opened her eyes again, she was in Starclan, she had never been here before, her eyes widened with curiosity. However, she didn't have time to explore as she saw the starry outline of her beloved sister step. Her tail stood on end and a rumbling purr started in her throat as she bounded over to her sister, Ripplepool.
"I am so proud of you." Her sister purred delightedly, her tail brushed Rosethorn's ear.
"I miss you." Rosethorn cried to her sister. Before they had a chance to continue their talk her old mentor came forward.
"Welcome to Starclan." Coalfoot beamed. She dipped her head to the tom as she turned to face him.
"Are you ready to receive you're nine lives." The tom asked.
It took her a minute to reply, as at first she couldn't bring her meow to say anything at all. She let out a whimper before holding her head up high and meowing, "Yes, I am ready." Her tone shook a little but she still held her head up high.
Before she had time to think a large tom rose to his paws, the tom just had to be Crimsonclaw, apparently he had been fierce in his day, but for as long as she had known the tom he had been an elder. He touched his nose to head head, it burned, it stung, it sent ripples of pain and shock running through her body. She flinched in pain and she wanted to pull away from him, yet she was drawn to the tom like a magnet.
"With this life I give you courage." Crimsonclaw murmured. "Use it well in defense of you're clan."
When the tom pulled away she felt light headed and unsteady on her feat, but she couldn't bring herself to say a word. She wobbled a little on her paws, taking a deep breath she braced herself. That had only been one, there was eight more to go. The thought made her shudder and so she pushed it to the back of her mind. Another tom padded forward to meet her, a tom that she had remembered had always fought to see others got justice. Touching his nose to her skull another agonizing pain shot through her making her quiver and shake.
"With this life I give you justice." Wolfpelt rumbled. "Use it well to judge the actions of others.
She felt weak and helpless after this, she felt like falling onto her side and curling up to let the pain bite away at her, until nothing was left. Next Silvermoon stepped forward, a beautiful she-cat, yet she was from another clan, Rosethorn knew her fairly well and so she dipped her head in greeting to her. Touching her nose to Rosethorn's skull. She had expected another shooting pain, but this one wasn't as painful, it was softer and more comforting than she would have thought. She let out a purr as she felt her third life being given to her.
"With this life I give you loyalty." Silvermoon meowed. "use it well to guide you're clan in the times of trouble." The she-cat urged.
Next Owlwing approached, a ruthless she-cat who has died in an important battle to save the life of her sister, who was less ruthless. Touching her nose to Rosethorn's skull Rosethorn felt herself racing across open land, feeling like she could run forever, hunt forever, like she would never manage to sleep again.
"With this life I give you tireless energy." The she-cat meowed. "Use it well to carry out the duties of a leader."
Next Brookjewel padded forward, she was Serenechaos's dead mother, she saw the pain and sorrow in her eyes as she looked up, but then that look was replaced with pride. Proud. She was proud of her daughter for how she was serving her clan and all the cats that she had managed to save. Brookejewel was very beautiful, just like her daughter.
"With this life I give you protection," She told her. "Use it well to care for you're Clan like a mother would care for her kits.
Rosethorn was expecting this life to be soft and gentle and well beautiful, but boy was she wrong. She almost felt like she had fallen from Starclan and had hit the ground again with a thud, The pain seemed to be endless and fierce, until Brookjewel finally pulled away, she let out a deep breath and stumbled over on the her side, she almost didn't have the energy to get back up, however then before her she saw her mentor, Coalfoot, she instantly pulled herself to her feet and stood tall, ready for the life she was about to obtain.
"With this life I give you mentoring. Use it well to train the young cats of you're clan." He meowed before touching her head.
With this life came anguish and terror, she hadn't remembered being like that as a young apprentice. She felt a fierce jolt of energy shoot through her before Coalfoot pulled away and she began to think that it would stop her heart. It was then that she saw Pearlfang, her mother padding to wards her, her eyes were glowing with happiness and she could feel her mothers purr vibrate through her when she touched her aching skull, she knew she had to be ready for anything, she didn't know what to expect anymore.
"With this life I give you compassion." Her mother meowed. "use it to care for the elders in you're clan, the weak, and the sick."
Rosethorn received this life like a wave of light rushing thought her, it left her feeling breathless and gasping for breath, but inside her heart was warm and caring, ready to give hospitality to any cat who needed it, she felt happy and good natured, she only wished that all her lives had felt like this, then she wouldn't be feeling so weary inside once all the feeling ebbed away. Next Ripplewave was padding over to her, the clan's past medicine cat, she greeted her with a dip of her head.
"With this life I give you love." She meowed. "Use it well for all the cats in you're care."
There was no pain in this live, and for that she felt relieved, she felt like she could love the most annoying kit and the most moody elder. She felt like she had so much love to give to others, so much love to share, so much love that she had and needed to give away to others. She felt like she would soon float off into her own dream world and be happy forever more, then she snapped back to reality as she saw who was approaching, Ashstar. At first she was happy to see her, but then she felt a lump in her throat, Ashstar has just disappeared, however now she knew for a fact that the old Riverclan leader was really dead. She felt like wailing, crying out, but all she could manage was a sad whimper.
"Good luck Rosestar you deserve this, I know I can trust you to lead Riverclan, and that is why I will give you you're last life, I am very proud of you and I know you will make all the right decisions. Yet I will always be here is you need me." Her old leader purred, they touched noses, before continuing.
"With this life I give you nobility and certainty and faith. Use it well to lead you're clan in the ways of Starclan and the warrior code." She meowed. She was still filled with the warmth of Rippledwave's life, that she was completely unprepared for the pain that came with Ashstar's. She opened her maw to scream, but no noise came out. She tried to pull away, but it was as if they were stuck together for eternity. She felt more pain than she would ever possibly be able to feel. She felt the pain of Ashstar's death, and she felt the pain of when she died, then pain of losing loved ones, and the pain of being on the battlefield, all at the same time. When Ashstar pulled away she yowled and fell to her side. She felt hollow and she lay in the middle of the night sky gasping for air, breath, something. She felt as helpless as she had been when she was a newborn kit, or even more helpless.
The other Starclan warriors began to rise, and Ashstar signaled with her tail for her to do the same, she did so taking a moment to regain her balance. "I hail you by you're new name, Rosestar." The old leader announced. "You're old live is no more. You have now received the nine lives of a leader, and Starclan grants you guardianship of Riverclan. Defend it well; Care for young and old; honor you're ancestors and the traditions of the warrior code; live each life with pride and dignity."
"Rosestar! Rosestar!" The cats of Starclan began to cheer for her, just as the forest cats would do for a newly named warrior. The chanting began to break off and she felt herself opening her eyes in a familiar cave, the cave in which the moonpool was. It took a minute for her to summon the energy to get to her feet and when she did, she felt invincible. Holding her head and tail high, her chest puffed out, she began to make her way back to Riverclan, as there new leader.
When she opened her eyes again, she was in Starclan, she had never been here before, her eyes widened with curiosity.
