Long ago, the small country of Akwutaine, then called Phaina, was populated by the People of Fire and the Sun Nomads. The People of Fire, massive but gentle herders, made their homes in the mountains, forests, and along the southeastern coast. They resembled mighty wolves, with hands like men and no visible pupils in their wide, glowing eyes. They lived anywhere, from the great coastal capital to the frigid mountain peaks. The Sun Nomads, clever hunters and pursuers of magical prowess, lived wherever the Golden Plateau Elk ventured. They were more human in appearance than their fiery wolven brethren, like thickly furred men with the heads and claws of cats. The two peoples lived in peace, equals in a small paradise all their own.
But, as I said, that was long ago.
Now, Phaina is called Akwutaine, and is ruled by the iron hand of the Hebiya. In truth, the Hebiya and the Sun Nomads are one and the same, but the Hebiya see themselves as superior. When the Hebiya invaded, they were met with no resistance- so sudden was their attack, and so sheltered from the world were the peoples of Phaina. The invaders brought with them their obedient slaves. Humans. Together the Hebiya and their slaves chased the People of Fire into hiding and built a new capital- Constancia. After years of Hebiya rule, the Sun Nomads, too stubborn to go into hiding, have been hunted near to extinction. Also, none of the mighty wolf-like Fire People have been sighted in nearly a decade. Well- that is not totally true. Like the Sun Nomads and Hebiya, so to do the People of Fire have a counterpart. And yet, this scientifically identical race spends its existence serving the richest of nobleman. Everyday they grow more restless and violent, drifting further and further from the civilized thoughts their kind once entertained.
It is this discontent race, the Lycansi, who are planning a rebellion.
