A soft breeze carried the sent of prey through the air. The golden coat of a large tom waved gently in the breeze. He sprang to the fence top and then landed softly on the other side. Slowly, he stalked towards the forest. His ears pricked forward as an owl hooted in the distance. “Ocy! What are you doing?” a voice cooed softly behind the young tom. He spun around and saw a young she-cat sitting on the post, staring sternly down on him. Her bright white coat shone in the dark. “I, uh…” Ocy stammered. The she-cats nose twitched nervously as she lifted her muzzle into the air. “Get over here. I smell wildcats.” The she-cat ordered. Ocys head hung low as he padded back over to the fence. “Yes Queen.” Ocy sighed. He hesitated for a moment as the breeze brought the soft squeal of a vole to his airs. Something must have caught it. He looked over his shoulder, longing to meet one of the wildcats. “Ocy,” Queen growled, sensing his hesitation, “don’t even think about it.” Ocy turned back and looked up pleadingly at his adult companion. He saw nothing but sternness in her eyes so he swiftly leaped onto the fence beside her. They waited in silence for the scent of the wildcats to blow away in the soft breeze. “Ocy, what were you doing?” Queen asked in her soft voice. She looked up into Ocys eyes and Ocy looked down into hers. He was already bigger then her even though he was a year younger. She always said it was because he was a tom and she was a she-cat, but Ocy sensed he was different from all the other cats. “I, uh…” Ocy searched for an excuse but found none. He hung his head low with his ears laid back. “I want to be wild.” Ocy said softly. Queens calm breathing quickened. Ocy could smell the strong fear scent coming from the white she-cat, like she knew something that he didn’t. He looked up in time so see her push her nervous feeling away and replace it with a soft, motherly look. “No you don’t. It’s a horrible world out there. You would hate it.” She reassured. Ocy scented his companions fear scent still, as if she doubted her own words. Ocy purred and licked Queens’s forehead, hoping to ease her nervousness. He truly wanted to know what made her act this way, but he didn’t want her to feel forced to talk. Queen purred softly as the two began sharing tongues with each other reassuringly. Ocys ears pricked forward at the familiar sound of the can opener. Queens ears pricked forward a second later. They both leaped off the fence and dove through the cat door, Ocy winning as always. Queen dove right into the cat chow but for once, Ocy held back. The muck that his Twoleg fed them no longer looked or smelled appetizing. He slowly turned towards the cat door. “Ocy? What are you doing?” Queen purred gently, but Ocy could scent the obvious anger she was feeling. He spun around to face her. “How could you eat that Twoleg muck when the world is full of fresh prey?” Ocy snapped, starting to become annoyed by Queens’s clinginess to him. “Twoleg muck!? You’re starting to sound like your moth-…” she stopped, her fear scent returning. “Oh god no.” she mumbled. “Oh god no what?” Ocy snapped, harsher then he meant. Queen looked at him as if she just noticed he was there. “Come with me. We must see if our Twolegs are asleep.” Queen ordered softly, sadness in her voice. Ocy padded softly behind is companion and entered their Twolegs bedroom. “Ocy, Queen. Come here.” The she-Twoleg whispered softly. Queen gave a soft purr as she hopped onto the Twolegs nest. Ocy sat on the floor in confusion. First Queen acts like she wants to tell him something, and now she was cuddling with the Twoleg? A moment later Queen hopped off the nest with a soft mew. “Follow me. She has fallen asleep.” Queen meowed. Ocy obediently followed behind Queen and they both hopped onto a shelf in the Twolegs den. Queen reached into an open draw and pulled up a picture. “This is your mother; the Twolegs first exotic pet.” Queen whispered. Ocy examined the picture. His mother was huge, much bigger then any adult cat he had ever seen. The words exotic pet made him turn his head towards Queen. “Exotic? What’s that?” he mewed curiously. “It means, you’re not from a pet shop or breeder. You are a wildcat.” She meowed cautiously. Ocys eyes opened wide in surprise. “W-w-wildcat?” he mewed softly, letting it sink-in. No wonder I wanted to be free so badly! My instincts were starting to kick in now that I am 6 moons old! “Why am I here then? Why would Twolegs want a wildcat?” Ocy whispered, looking deep into Queens amber eyes. “Because that’s how Twolegs are. While you are young you are good fun and cute, but once you get too big it’s off to the Fur Stealer for you.” Queen snapped. Ocy winced at the tone in Queens voice. It was not anger, but fright. She was scared for him. “I should have let you go earlier while you had the chance to meet another wildcat. I was being selfish keeping you here.” Queen sighed softly. Ocy stood and jumped from the shelf. “Then I should go now, right? Maybe the wildcats will still be there.” Ocy meowed nervously. “You are an Ocelot and I am just a Persian. I will not be able to smell as well as you. Let us go and see if there is a band of wildcats for you to join.” Queen mewed softly, obviously not happy about seeing her companion leave. Ocy licked her nose. “No matter where fate takes me, I will always remember you Queen.” Ocy purred softly. Queen caught his gaze and gave a small smile, a purr rising in her throat. She licked his muzzle. “Same goes to you, young one.” Queen purred. They both padded out of the Twoleg den. Excitement rose in Ocys chest. Living with real wildcats! They dove through the cat door and without looking back, jumped over the fence. Queen tensed immediately, never before had she gone farther then the safety of the fence. “I smell cats; both wild and tame. The scent is stale, but strong enough for me to follow. You don’t need to come.” Ocy offered. Queen looked up gratefully at him. “Goodbye Ocy.” She purred sadly, nuzzling his muzzle. “Goodbye? I’m not leaving forever. I will come to visit you mousebrain!” Ocy reassured playfully. Queen purred happily. “You better keep that promise.” She snarled back, just as playfully. Ocy chuckled and then lifted his muzzle into the air, opening his mouth slightly to get a better smell. “Well, see you around. I should probably try and catch something to hopefully give as a peace offering to the wildcats.” Ocy meowed softly. Queens smile faded and she shook her head. With a flick of her tail she was over the fence and gone. Ocy stared at the fence for what seemed like several moons. He wasn’t sure if he could leave Queen, or the Twolegs that had treated him so well. He turned towards the trees, and saw the maple leaves moving gently in the breeze. Queens’s comforting scent still filled Ocys scent glands. A moment later, the scent was gone. Ocy padded softly into the forest, moving lightly on his paws. He opened his mouth slightly to taste the air. The scent of prey filled his scent glands and a moment later, Ocy had pinpointed the sound of a wood mouse rustling in the leaves. He crouched into a stalking position and slowly made his way forward. The mouse’s ears pricked forward and it froze. Ocy pounced, but he knew it was too late. The mouse had smelled him. He landed gently onto his paws, so not to alert any other prey nearby. Already the mouse’s scent was beginning to get covered up by the sent of sap. “That was pathetic!” a mocking voice growled. Ocy spun around and was face to face with a large, golden tom. The tom had black blotches from tail tip to muzzle. An Ocelot! A low growl rumbled in Ocy’s throat. He puffed out defensively and unsheathed his claws. The tom stared hard at Ocy, fire blazing in his eyes. Ocy noticed a hint of amusement shining through the aggressive look the tom held. “I see I have no need to fear you stealing our prey.” The tom snarled. “What business do you have lurking about SpottedClan’s territory?” Ocy held the tom’s angry glare as evenly as he could. His own fear scent filled his scent glands. “I come in peace, trust me about that.” Ocy meowed firmly. At his words the tom’s fur flattened, but the fire in his eyes did not dim. “I don’t recognize you or your scent. What is your name?” the tom ordered. Ocy hesitated, not trusting this feline. The fire flared even brighter in the toms eyes. “Answer me or I will take you as a prisoner to my camp!” “My name is Ocy.” Ocy squeaked. He felt as small and helpless as a newborn kit under the wildcat’s infuriated glare. “Ocy? That sounds like a kittypet name.” the cat spat disgustedly. “Kittypet?” Ocy dared to ask. Disgust with a hint of amusement replaced the anger in the tom’s eyes. “Only a kittypet would not know what a kittypet is!” the tom roared in amusement. “For a moment, I thought you were an ocelot! You are awfully big for a kittypet.” Ocy stood up tall, determination in his eyes. His fear scent faded away. “I am an ocelot. My mother was stolen from the forest and I was born in a Twoleg home. I have left my Twoleg nest in order to live among my own kind.” Ocy stated. The tom stared hard at Ocy. All traces of anger and disgust had vanished from the golden toms eyes. “A wildcat kittypet.” He meowed softly. A moment later he shook his head. “Well, that would explain why you couldn’t even sneak up on a wood mouse. Maybe I can help you find what you are looking for. How old are you?” “Just turned six moons.” Ocy stated, excitement rising in his chest. “That’s about the same as me. My name is Moonpaw by the way.” The tom finally introduced himself. “SpottedClan is full of cats like us. All different species, but all spotted. Our leader, Greensun, is very wise and thoughtful. She is a Jaguar and she will decide if you may join our clan or not.” Moonpaw stated. Ocy thought he would burst with excitement and he wanted to roar his gratitude to Moonpaw, but he merely bowed his head gratefully and took step behind him as he headed off into the forest. * * * * The scents of many cats swirled through Ocys scent glands. “Stay in this bramble patch. I am sure Greensun won’t cause any harm to you, but I can’t say the same about Bloodclaw, our deputy. He is a Leopard so you would have no chance against him.” Moonpaw meowed softly. Ocy laid flat in the bramble patch and prayed Moonpaw would return before any cat scented him. He had gotten lucky that Moonpaw had given him a chance to explain himself when he was caught snooping around in SpottedClan territory, the other clan members may not be so friendly. The scent of prey teased Ocy. He could hear the creature scurrying nearby and his mouth watered as he realized how hungry he was. He had refused the Twoleg muck so he hadn’t eaten since the night before. He slowly stood and looked around to make sure he was alone. He opened his mouth slightly and drank in the air. Many cat scents were close by, but they were all stale. The only fresh scent he smelled, was that of a mouse. Ocy dropped into a hunting position and crept closer to his prey. Just then a twig snapped. The mouse darted off and Ocy realized another scent besides the mouse’s lingered near by. He turned around but before he could see who was around, a stinging sensation filled his body as something rammed into his side. He flew a few feet and laid there, the breath knocked out of him. Ocy slowly got to his feet to face his attacker but whomever it was pounced onto his back and bit down onto Ocy’s ear. Ocy let out a roar of pain as he tried to shake his attacker off. A loud roar rang through the trees. “Bloodclaw! Off of him!” a stern voice ordered. Ocy couldn’t see fore his vision blurred from the pain in his ear. His attacker, Bloodclaw, rolled off of Ocy and then Ocy fell to the ground. In his life as a kittypet, he had never had to endure such pain. A gentle lick took some of the pain away from Ocy’s ear. As his vision cleared, he saw the concerned face of Moonpaw as he gently licked Ocy’s wounds. “Let’s get you to Sunpelt, our medicine cat.” Moonpaw offered as Ocy got to his wobbly legs. Ocy looked at Bloodclaw and the other cat. Bloodclaw was a large Leopard, just as Moonpaw had said. Bloodclaw’s tail twitched irritably as the other cat whispered softly to him. Bloodclaw listened intently to the other cat, but his gaze never left Ocy. A look of pure hatred was pasted across his scarred face. The other cat was a she-cat. She was a Jaguar so she was a bit bigger then Bloodclaw. Her eyes were filled with continuous wisdom, as if she had been around for centuries and saw things no other cat has ever seen. “That’s Greensun, the clan leader.” Moonpaw explained. Ocy stared in awe at the beautiful feline. “She looks so young, but her eyes are one of an elder…” Ocy examined. Moonpaw gave a slight smile. “Leaders have nine lives so she is much older then she appears.” Moonpaw explained. He then gave a flick of his tail, signaling Ocy to follow him and leave the leader and deputy behind. “We have to get you to Sunpelt before infection inhabits that tear in your ear. Greensun has given you permission to stay with us for the night. She and Bloodclaw will discuss what will happen after that.” Moonpaw meowed. Ocy shook his head in acknowledgement but kept silent. The sent of many cats whirled in the air once more. Moonpaw quickened his pace as the two entered a tunnel woven in vines and twigs. Ocy examined in awe at how neatly and perfectly done the tunnel was. Then Moonpaw disappeared through a vine curtain. Ocy slowed his pace, no longer eager to meet so many wildcats, after how Bloodclaw treated him. Ocy stared in awe as he walked through the vine curtain. Instantly, cats began to pause and fluff up at the site and smell of him. Moonpaw dashed to his side and silently lead him through all the wildcats. The cats’ fear scent was thick in the air. None of them knew what to make of this newcomer. Moonpaw lead Ocy to a tunnel in the corner of the clearing. This tunnel was also weaved neatly with vines and twigs. “Sunpelt? You there?” Moonpaw meowed into the dark den. “In here Moonpaw. Who do you have with you? I smell an unfamiliar cat scent.” meowed a soft voice. A cat, about the size of Ocy and Moonpaw appeared in the darkness. Her green eyes shone bright with interest. “This is Ocy. He is a wildcat kittypet. I found him prowling around our territory, having a pathetic hunting expedition. He wanted to live with his own kind so I brought him here, with Greensun’s permission, but Bloodclaw attacked him.” Moonpaw explained. As he spoke, Sunpelt’s eyes had gotten wider and brighter, as if this excited her a great deal. “It is a pleasure to meet you Ocy.” Sunpelt mewed cheerfully. “Let me take a look at those wounds. Lay down.” Ocy did as he was told and laid down where he had been standing. Sunpelt examined his ear where Bloodclaw had ripped a piece off and then at the claw marks on his back that Bloodclaw had given when he had pounced onto his back. Sunpelt sighed and ran into the next room. A moment later she returned with a bundle of something. “I am going to put some cobwebs on the wounds to stop the bleeding. Your first day in the forest and you already have an extremely noticeable scar.” She rolled her eyes as she put a clump of cobweb into his ear wound. Moonpaw purred in amusement. “It is going to take a lot of training to get you to be a warrior.” He teased. “That is if Greensun allows you to remain in our clan.” He added sadly. “I’m sure Greensun will not leave a wildcat to live with Twolegs. She is better then that.” Sunpelt reassured the two ocelots. “She is considering the matter with Bloodclaw, and he doesn’t like me one bit.” Ocy sighed miserably. Sunpelt gave Ocy a sympathetic look. “Greensun always does what is best for her clan. That means she does not always listen to what Bloodclaw has to say.” She said simply. Moonpaw and Ocy glanced at each other. The same questioning look danced across their face. “Wouldn’t the deputy always want what’s best for his clan and leader?” Ocy mewed softly. Sunpelt gave the two a nervous look. Moonpaw and Ocy saw that Sunpelt was done talking so they let the conversation drop at that. * * * * “You are not sleeping in with the apprentices, kittypet!” Bloodclaw snarled. Ocy shrunk under the deputy’s gaze and looked at Moonpaw for help. “Where is he going to sleep? Surely Greensun would not make an innocent cat sleep on the cold, outside ground!” Moonpaw argued. Ocy gave a grateful glance to his friend. “Stay out of it Moonpaw! Go off to the apprentices’ den! The kittypet shall sleep in Sunpelt’s den.” Bloodclaw snapped, his tail twitching angrily. Moonpaw glared at Bloodclaw for a moment longer and then turned and ran into the apprentice den. Ocy lifted his nose into the air. The scent of the clan’s fresh kill pile made Ocy’s stomach grumbled. Bloodclaw saw Ocy’s eyes linger over to the fresh kill pile. “Don’t even think about it, kittypet! Fresh kill is for clan members only.” “Bloodclaw! Leave Ocy alone.” A voice snapped angrily. The two cats spun towards the voice. Greensun glared angrily back at them. “Go ahead and grab what ever you like Ocy. Please bring something for Sunpelt too.” Greensun’s eyes softened when she spoke to the young ocelot. Her eyes then lingered back to Bloodclaw. “Go get some sleep. I want you to take out the dawn patrol tomorrow. Rainpaw and Blackface reported scenting StripedClan in our territory again. Take them both with you.” Greensun snapped angrily towards Bloodclaw. Ocy could see that she was not only angry at the way Bloodclaw had treated him, there was something else angering her. Bloodclaw started towards the warriors den. “Don’t forget to let Rainpaw and Blackface know, you mouse-brain!” Greensun spat. Bloodclaw mumbled something under his breath, but headed over to where Rainpaw and Blackface were sharing a rabbit. Ocy bowed to Greensun who had turned her gaze back to him. “Thank you Greensun.” He mewed gratefully. Greensun gave him a soft smile and then turned and trotted off to the elders den. Ocy ran over to the fresh kill pile and grabbed a rabbit kit for Sunpelt and chose a wood mouse for himself. He wasn’t a member of this clan so he felt it necessary to choose the smallest one for himself. “Hey Sunpelt, Greensun told me to spend the night in here.” Ocy said cheerfully as he entered the medicine cats den. Her eyes widened gratefully as he handed her the plump rabbit kit. “You’re still going to be hungry after that! There is barley a mouthful on the scrap of mouse.” Sunpelt meowed amused. “I know, but I have no right to take anything but the smallest thing in the fresh kill pile.” Ocy mewed softly. Sunpelt gave him a sympathetic gaze. “Bloodclaw still making sure you don’t feel welcome?” Sunpelt asked through a mouthful of rabbit. “Yeah, Greensun yells at him every time though.” Ocy smiled. A flash of amusement went across Sunpelts face. “Good old Greensun. It is about time Bloodclaw got yelled at.” Sunpelt laughed. A frown crossed Ocy’s face. “I am sure Greensun will let you stay. She seems to have taken a liking to you.” Sunpelt reassured as if she had read Ocy’s mind. “I am sure SunClan will make sure she has you stay. Fate made you meet Moonpaw so that means you have a future that will only come true if you remain in SpottedClan.” Ocy gave a questioning look towards Sunpelt. “SunClan?” he asked curiously. “Have your Twolegs ever mention the Rainbow Bridge?” Sunpelt question. “Yeah, when one of my companions, Silky, passed away. They said he was off to live at the Rainbow Bridge.” Ocy meowed. “Well, Rainbow Bridge and SunClan is the same thing. When one of our loved ones passes away, they go to SunClan. They then watch over their birth clan forever and guide them. Kittypets don’t know about SunClan because regular cats don’t get messages from them. Only medicine cats and Clan leaders get messages from SunClan. Even though kittypets don’t know it exists, they still go there when they die. Any cat that has passed that was close to you, will watch over you forever. Do you have any really close cats that have passed away?” Sunpelt explained. Ocy stared in disbelief. “Well, my mother was taken to the fur stealer and killed for her fur. So I guess my mum would be up there.” Ocy explained softly. “Well, your mum most likely wanted you to avoid that horrible fate so she chose a different path for you instead. She had you escape and join a wildcat clan!” Sunpelt smiled happily. Ocy’s eyes were wide with awe. He was speechless. “Well, now that you know all about SunClan, we better get some sleep.” Sunpelt mewed. She pushed the rest of the rabbit aside and her eyes told Ocy to do the same with the mouse bones. With a flick of her tail she led him into another room where a think moss bed lay. She curled up to one side of it. “Well, come on. There is plenty of room.” She mewed. Ocy curled up beside her and drank in her sweet scent. “Goodnight Ocy. Tomorrow holds the answer or whether you stay in SpottedClan or not. Better get a good night sleep.” Ocy’s eyes drooped and soon he let sleep over take him. * * * * “Ocy, wake up.” I soft voice cooed. The image of Queen entered his head and he slowly opened his eyes. The dirt walls shocked him. What shocked him even more was it wasn’t Queens’s voice he was hearing. It was another she-cat. Her green eyes shone brightly, along with her bright orange fur. The memories of the events from the day before came flooding back to him. “Good morning Sunpelt.” Ocy groaned. Sunpelt had an excited look in her eyes. “You mean evening? You slept the whole day away! Greensun didn’t mind though, but come one. Greensun is about to call a clan meeting!” Sunpelt urged. Ocy got to his feet but remained where he was. “I am not a clan member. Remember?” Ocy mumbled, ignoring the fact he had slept a whole day. “Mouse-brain! The clan meeting is about whether you shall stay or leave!” Sunpelt meowed. Ocy got up and ran out of the den with Sunpelt on his heals. Greensun sat outside her den and at the site of him she jumped to the top of a tall rock. “Cats of SpottedClan, I, Greensun, leader of SpottedClan, call you all to SkyRock for an important clan meeting!” Greensun’s voice rang through the trees. Cats of all ages gathered under the large rock, SkyRock, and looked up at there leader. Ocy sat in the back of the group with Sunpelt by his side. “She said cats of SpottedClan, not outside cats!” Spat a golden tom. The tom was an ocelot, just like Ocy. Fire flared in his eyes but Ocy held his ground and ignored him. “That’s Blackeye, a close friend of BloodClaw’s.” Sunpelt whispered. Ocy’s tail twitched nervously. He certainly had more enemies then he wanted already. “As you may have noticed, we have a new cat in our territory. Moonpaw brought him to us. Ocy, can you come up here please?” Greensun meowed loudly. Ocy froze as all eyes turned towards him. Sunpelt gave a gentle nudge and Ocy slowly made his way over to SkyRock. Sunpelt stayed right behind him. Moonpaw approached him and as Ocy leaped to the top of SkyRock, both Moonpaw and Sunpelt sat at the base. Ocy bowed his head respectively towards Greensun and took a seat across from her. “This is Ocy, a six moon old ocelot. He ran away from home to escape the same fate as his mother, a trip to the fur stealer that would end his life. Moonpaw discovered him trying to hunt, unsuccessfully. I believe if we allow him to stay in our clan, he will be a wonderful addition to our family. With a little help he could become a fine hunter and an excellent warrior. We all know Ocelot’s are one of the best in battle because of their swiftness and tree climbing abilities!” Greensun howled. “I don’t want to make a final decision without some of my clans input though.” Greensun meowed a bit softer. “Sunpelt, you have spent the most time with Ocy so far. Do you think he would make a good addition to our clan?” Sunpelt fidgeted nervously as all eyes darted to her. Hatred filled some of the cats eyes but most of them just had a look of curiousness. “It is true that I have spent a good amount of time with this young cat.” Sunpelt began, her voice rising as she got more comfortable. “I am honored to have spent time with this wonderful Ocelot. I believe SunClan themselves sent him to us. They didn’t want him to go to the fur stealer anymore then he wanted to go. I say let him stay.” Sunpelt concluded. Greensun’s eyes shone with excitement. Ocy’s ears felt hot with embarrassment. Please don’t ask Bloodclaw his opinion! Ocy prayed. Greensun’s eyes scanned the crowd of cats as she searched for someone in particular. Her eyes rested on a large black tom covered with scars. He sat in the back of the crowd, right near Blackeye. His eyes shone with curiosity and wisdom. “Notail, what do you think?” Greensun meowed loudly. Now that Ocy looked closer, he could notice that there was no tail on this cat. He was larger then Greensun, but only by a whisker. Definitely a Jaguar. Ocy decided. Notail looked startled that he would be honored to put his word in. He stared at Greensun at a loss for words. “Come one Notail. You are the oldest and most respected cat in SpottedClan. Of course we want your input.” Greensun mewed playfully. A smile crossed the toms face. “I believe Ocy has as good of a chance in this clan as any of our clan-born kits. Just look at him! I am old with bad vision but even I can’t miss those large muscles! He will be an extremely useful cat in battle.” Notail concluded. Greensun smiled and turned to Ocy. “It is settled then. You are a new member of SpottedClan. Your apprentice name will be Eaglepaw. You have shone great bravery and determination to be free by coming here. Welcome to SpottedClan.” Greensun mewed loudly. She bent over and licked Eaglepaw’s, head while Eaglepaw licked her shoulder in respect. When the two pulled away from each other, Eaglepaw caught BloodClaw’s eye. He had a look of shock and hatred. He is shocked that Greensun didn’t try for his input so now he hates me even more! Eaglespaw’s tail twitched nervously as he forced himself to look away from the deputy. Suddenly a voice rang out of the crowd. Eaglepaw and Greensun looked down to see Moonpaw looking up at them questioningly. “Who shall be Eaglepaw’s mentor?” the young tom questioned. Greensun eyes darted over the crowd of cats, as if trying to decide which cat would mentor him best. Finally she howled to get all the cats attention once more. “Moonpaw has brought up another important matter. In the excitement of getting a new clan member, I forgot to say who Eaglepaw’s mentor shall be.” Greensun mewed with a hint of embarrassment in her voice. All the cats stood expectantly below the SkyRock. “I will mentor Eaglepaw.” Greensun finished. Eaglepaw smiled excitedly. All the cats murmured in surprise below the SkyRock. “Have you lost your mind Greensun!? Surely you wouldn’t even be soft enough to honor a kittypet with such a reward!” spat a voice in disgust. Greensun spun around, her eyes blazed with fire. A moment later her eyes rested on Bloodclaw. “Do you dare question your leader’s words!? You may be deputy but you are not leader yet!” Greensun snarled furiously. All the chattering cats hushed to silence as the leader and deputy glared angrily at each other. Eaglepaw saw Bloodclaw open his mouth to throw back a remark, but he caught himself. He took a breath and bowed his head. “My apologies Greensun, I was out of place. Your word is law. I shall sleep outside in the open as my punishment.” Bloodclaw meowed, watching his feet. He mumbled something inaudible and then looked back up into his leaders eyes. Greensun’s eyes softened at this. “I accept your apology and understand your objection. You shall not have to endure the rainy forecast for tonight.” Greensun mewed warmly to her deputy. Bloodclaw bowed his head gratefully but Eaglepaw saw there was no gratefulness in the deputy’s eyes, only hunger. Hunger for something that Eaglepaw was unable to read. Eaglepaw gave up reading Bloodclaw’s eyes as he felt a wet drop sink into his skin. Then another drop and another. Eaglepaw jumped to his feet to find shelter, but saw all the other cats stay put. Although he hated getting his fur wet, he forced himself to sit back on his haunches. “This clan meeting is officially over!” Greensun called out. Eaglepaw got to his feet and was about to follow Moonpaw when he felt a tap on his shoulder. He turned to be staring into the amber eyes of Bloodclaw. “Your standing vigil, just as all new apprentices must.” Bloodclaw snapped. “But it’s raining!” Eaglepaw protested, thinking this was just another way for Bloodclaw to show his hatred. Greensun approached from behind, her eyes soft with sympathy. “I am sorry Eaglepaw, but Bloodclaw is right. No matter the whether, new apprentices must sit vigil. You are not the first to do so in the rain. Some even have to in the snow of Leafbare.” Greensun meowed warmly. Her silver eyes glistened in the milky moonlight of the evening. Her wisdom burned like wildfire deep in her optics, warming Eaglepaw to the bone. “Okay, I will do as SunClan desires.” Eaglepaw agreed, bowing his head to both leader and deputy. He padded to the camp entrance and sat, watching and scenting, ready for any danger.
* * * *
“Eaglepaw!” The friendly voice made Eaglepaw jolt to his feet. “Were you asleep?” Moonpaw’s voice was friendly, but concerned. “No!” Eaglepaw said in his defense. “I slept all yesterday; I didn’t need to sleep last night. I was just…” he trailed off, embarrassment in his voice. “You were thinking about your kittypet life, weren’t you?” Moonpaw mewed, taking a seat beside his friend, his eyes soft in sympathy. “Not really my kittypet life, my kittypet companion, Queen.” Eaglepaw admitted in a mumble. Moonpaw nodded his head and then jumped to his feet. “Well don’t let Bloodclaw know, he’s coming right now.” Moonpaw growled in irritation. The mighty leopard approached the two cats, his eyes flared in anger. “Greensun wants you both.” He snarled and then turned away to start planning patrols. Eaglepaw shot Moonpaw a questioning glance but Moonpaw looked as confused as he was. They both made their way to the leaders den, going through a thick, vine woven curtain. “Hello boys!” the friendly voice sang. “Make yourself comfortable.” The two cubs exchanged glances and took a seat near their leader. “Okay, how would you both like to come to today’s gathering?” Greensun offered. Moonpaw’s eyes widened in surprise but Eaglepaw couldn’t see what the big deal was. “A gathering!? We both just barely became apprentices and you want us to go to a gathering!?” the ocelot cub mewed in joyful surprise. Greensun’s eyes shone with amusement as she nodded her head. “I want everyone to meet Eaglepaw and since you’re his best friend I figured you should come along as well.”
