A nose twitched as all the BugClan members gathered beneath Bluecage. They all stared curiously at their clan leader, wondering what caused him to call such a sudden meeting. “Members of BugClan,” the rabbit began, “our most senior warrior, Halfheart, has been grounded by her loner parents. As much as I hate to admit it, their word is higher then my own. Halfheart will be unable to partake in any of the Twoleg tasks we need completed. She is also unable to contact any of our other human clan members. If any of you think of a way to get the word to our Twoleg members, report it to me or Pigheart immediately.” The rabbit grunted. “How long is Halfheart grounded for Smallstar? Surely it won’t be long enough to make a difference in anything we need. We don’t have anything urgent to do.” A young she rat called out. “Rabbitpaw, Smallstar knows what he is talking about. If he is concerned then it will make a difference!” growled another young she rat. Rabbitpaw shrunk low, embarrassed for questioning her leader. “I apologize for my apprentice’s disrespectful words Smallstar.” The she rat squeaked, giving her apprentice an annoyed look. “Don’t worry Sharptooth. Don’t be so quick to scold your sister. You may be her mentor, but you are no older then her.” Smallstar grunted from atop Bluecage. Sharptooth shrunk under her leaders annoyed gaze. A chubby grey tom hopped atop Bluecage and stood beside Smallstar. “What is it Pigheart?” Smallstar questioned. “I scent Halfheart approaching, she smells distressed.” Pigheart mewed softly, so only the animal clan members could hear. A moment later they all heard the door click open. “Don’t you dare think about sneaking on the telephone while I am gone Lindsay! No telephone, computer, or friends houses! Remember that!” called an angry voice. Lindsay was Halfheart’s Twoleg name. Her parents knew nothing of BugClan. Halfheart slammed the door behind her and turned towards the BugClan group. Her eyes widened and filled with hurt. “Smallstar, you called a meeting without me?” Halfheart said softly, her voice drowned with pain. “I was just explaining that you were grounded and unable to contact anyone or do our Twoleg tasks.” Smallstar explained softly. The pain in Halfheart’s eyes washed away, replaced by anger. “Stupid parents! I didn’t even do anything!” Halfheart snarled angrily. A multi-colored tom rubbed against her legs comfortingly. “It is okay, Halfheart. We are always here for you, no matter how ignorant your parents are.” Mewed the tom. Halfheart picked him up and held him close to her chest. “You may not have enough courage to become a warrior anytime soon, Mousepaw, but you sure have a large heart.” Halfheart said softly, holding Mousepaw close to her face. Mousepaw purred in delight. “Lindsay, put Ferdinand and Geronimo out before I go! They haven’t been out since yesterday!” one of Halfheart’s parents called up the stairs. Mousepaw stopped purring and grunted unhappily. “Halfheart, tell her we let ourselves out already. I don’t want to go outside!” Mousepaw meowed. Pigheart jumped down from atop Bluecage and Smallstar followed behind him. “Now Mousepaw, you know she can’t do that. They would send her to the mental institution!” Smallstar laughed. “Besides, how long do you want your brother, who is the same age, to be your mentor? You have to work on that courage and I order him to work on it now.” Smallstar grunted. Halfheart put Mousepaw down and he padded over to Pigheart. “May Starclan grant you a safe return.” Smallstar declared loudly. Halfheart opened the door and was shocked to see her mother standing right outside of it. Mousepaw and Pigheart dashed between her legs, hoping to distract her. It didn’t work. “What are the rats doing out of their cage!? What are Sammy, Kits, and Snuggles doing in your room?” her mother hollered. “Err…” Halfheart stood speechless. Coyoteclaw twitched at being called Sammy. He hated his kittypet name. Blackdevil didn’t care that she was called Kits, as long as she always got what she wanted. Tailwag knew the name Snuggles suited her so she never complained. Sharptooth and Rabbitpaw quickly dived into their cage and hid under their log, knowing that that is how rats were supposed to act. This seemed to calm Halfheart’s mother a little, seeing the animals act normal. “Oh yeah.” Tailwag said suddenly and gave a loud bark as she dashed over and began licking Halfheart’s mother. Coyoteclaw and Blackdevil saw this was their chance so they dashed out of the room and down the stairs. A moment later Tailwag followed. Halfheart bent over and shut the rat cage and Smallstar slowly made his was to his own cage, not to anxious at being locked up; even though he could easily unlock it. “That’s better. Now go let Ferdinand, Geronimo, and Sammy out. Also, return Snuggles and Kits back up to Gram’s house before she gets home. You are so lucky I am in a good mood or I would extend your groundation another week.” Halfheart’s mother ordered. Halfheart hung her head and made her way downstairs. Mousepaw, Pigheart, and Coyoteclaw stood waiting at the front door. She opened it and Coyoteclaw sped out without hesitation. He hated the indoors, especially in Halfheart’s house. Mousepaw sighed and ran out the door. Pigheart rolled his eyes at his brother/apprentice and dashed after him. “Halfheart, is that you?” came a small meow from the bush beside the front door. Halfheart looked in the bush and spotted am orangey fur pelt. “Yeah, it’s me Sunpelt.” Halfheart whispered. She held the door open and Sunpelt dashed up the stairs into Halfheart’s bedroom. Halfheart walked over to the side door that lead up to her grams house. Tailwag and Blackdevil sat there patiently waiting to be let up. She opened the door and followed the two up the stairs into her gram’s empty house. “I will be back for you later. I swear by Starclan.” Halfheart promised. She then turned and shut the door behind her. Her parents’ car was gone but she knew it still wasn’t safe to bring Tailwag and Blackdevil downstairs again. Her parents had a knack for telling when one little thing is different. As Halfheart climbed the stairs to her bedroom she heard the soft sounds of Sunpelt and Smallstar whispering quietly. “An outside cat? Did you talk to him?” Smallstar grunted nervously. “Only a bit, before I told him I was part of BugClan. After I told him that, he tensed and said he had to go.” Halfheart could barely hear Sunpelt’s soft voice explain. Halfheart cleared her throat to make her presence known. Smallstar turned towards her, surprised. “Halfheart, just the Twoleg I needed to see. Fetch Pigheart and send him to me. You can continue Mousepaw’s training.” Smallstar ordered. He plastered a fake, warm, smile to his face. “But, I want to hear about the outsider!” Halfheart dared to challenge. Fury blazed in Smallstar’s eyes. “You may be our healer, but you still have no right to question my orders.” Smallstar growled. Rabbitpaw and Sharptooth drowsily came out from under their log. “What’s all the growling about?” Rabbitpaw questioned. Smallstar turned his gaze over to the two she-rats. “And take those two with you. It is about time Rabbitpaw got trained outside of the cage.” Smallstar grunted. Halfheart gave her leader an annoyed growl but she opened the rat cage and allowed the two girls to run out and down the stairs. With one last annoyed look at Smallstar, Halfheart followed the girls down the stairs and out the door. “Help me find Pigheart. Use your nose.” Halfheart ordered the two rats. Sharptooth shot a glance back at Halfheart but then realized that Halfheart was trying to train Rabbitpaw. “Okay, let’s test our senses. What do you smell Rabbitpaw?” Sharptooth asked. Rabbitpaw stopped moving and lifted her snout into the air. “I smell birds and mice. I also smell rain.” Rabbitpaw shivered. She hated getting wet more then anything. “The rain is a long way off.” Sharptooth reassured. “What else do you smell?” “Well, I smell Pigheart and Mousepaw, but their scent is stale. They probably just stood here to sniff the air before dashing to the woods.” Rabbitpaw declared. “They went this way!” Rabbitpaw dashed off towards the woods. Sharptooth hollered after her but didn’t get her attention. She dashed off after her with Halfheart on her heals. Rabbitpaw disappeared within the trees. * * * *
“Where could she have gone?” Halfheart questioned. They had already found Pigheart and Mousepaw and sent Pigheart to Smallstar and Sunpelt. Mousepaw trailed a little behind them, muzzle held high, trying to catch any scent that he could of Rabbitpaw. “I don’t know.” Sharptooth’s voice was full of defeat. “Guys, I don’t like the scent of this.” came Mousepaw’s nervous voice. Halfheart smelled the air, but because of her weak Twoleg nose, caught no scent. Sharptooth, on the other hand, had wide eyes. “What is it?” Halfheart asked nervously. “A strange cat. Not a loner though. Perhaps another clan…” Sharptooth’s eyes widened even more as her nose picked up another scent. “Whatever cat it is, it is with Rabbitpaw.” Halfheart’s heart skipped a beat and Mousepaw rubbed up against her leg nervously. Halfheart parted a bush and caught a strong scent of blood. “I smell that.” Halfheart almost threw up. Her eyes then picked up movement. Suddenly Coyoteclaw stood in front of Halfheart. “Drop the rat.” He snarled. A large orange cat dropped Rabbitpaw’s limp body in shock. His wide eyes quickly narrowed and a smirk crossed his face. “So, cats now work with rats, do they?” the tom laughed. Coyoteclaw snarled and lunged at the cat. The cat gasped as Coyoteclaws large paws pinned him to the ground. “I work with rats, humans, a dog, and other cats. Our leader is even a rabbit! That kind of variety of species makes us more likely to defeat a boring group full of cats.” Coyoteclaw snarled. He gripped the tom’s neck loosely, and motioned, with a flick of his tail, for Halfheart, Sharptooth, and Mousepaw to approach. The three clan mates approached cautiously, their eyes darting in all directions to look for danger. Sharptooth dove over to Rabbitpaw and let out a moan of distress. Halfheart dashed to her side and examined the still body. She could faintly see the rise and drop of her chest as she breathed. “Find me some cobwebs Mousepaw, quick!” Halfheart ordered. The multi-colored apprentice dashed to the club house where some extra supplies were kept. Halfheart’s eyes lingered over to the cat that Coyoteclaw had pinned. A look of recognition filled her eyes. “That’s The Hunter!” she exclaimed. Coyoteclaw nodded. “I knew I recognized his scent!” he mewed. His jaws tightened around the orange cat’s throat. “The Hunter is the one that steals our prey, right?” Sharptooth tried to sound calm, but anger and devastation flared in his voice. Halfheart gave the cat an angry glare. “I fed you thinking you were merely a loner! I was kind to you! How could you do this to me?” pain flowed in her voice. “How was I supposed to know you were part of a clan? You’re a Twoleg!” The Hunter spat in disgust. “Also, I am not known as The Hunter in my clan. I am Crocodilestar, leader of CrocodileClan.” Crocodilestar mewed. Coyoteclaws paw pressed down harder on the tom’s throat. Halfheart shook her head, her eyes filled with pain and confusion. Her eyes then quickly darted over to Rabbitpaw’s motionless body. Mousepaw appeared from behind a tree with a mouth full of cobwebs. “Here you go Halfheart. I hope this is enough.” He mewed as he placed the cobwebs besides Halfhearts feet. Halfheart shot another painful, disgusted glance towards Crocodilestar before going to work on Rabbitpaw. She gently placed cobwebs thickly all over the she rats body. Once the rat was covered she turned back to Coyoteclaw who was still holding down Crocodilestar. “You may release him Coyoteclaw.” Halfheart ordered as if she were deputy. “But if any of us catch him in BugClan territory again, don’t hesitate to kill him.” Coyoteclaw stepped aside and allowed the CrocodileClan leader to get to his feet. “By the way,” Crocodilestar mewed mockingly, “you know Squeaky and Fluffy? Try Mousevoice and Brownspot.” As the tom spat out the words, he turned and ran back into the trees. Pain overwhelmed Halfheart and she noticed a bit of pain in Mousepaw’s and Coyoteclaw’s eyes too. “What are you two upset about?” Halfheart questioned. “I am in love with Brownspot.” Mousepaw admitted. “And Mousevoice is a dear friend of mine.” Coyoteclaw mewed. Both cats hung their heads in distress. Halfheart gently lifted Rabbitpaw and made her way back to her house, the other animals on her heals. * * * * “What happened?” the anxious grunt of Smallstar sounded from next to Halfheart. She didn’t reply at first while she wrapped Rabbitpaw up and placed her in her cage. Sharptooth followed close behind and curled around her sister’s body. Already Rabbitpaw was getting stronger, now that her bleeding was being kept under control. “There are bigger worries besides her wounds.” Halfheart mumbled softly. Smallstar’s eyes narrowed in concern as he rested back on his haunches. He knew not to press the issue until Rabbitpaw was better. Sunpelt turned to leave but then paused. She shot a concerned glance at Smallstar. Halfheart caught it and sighed. She knew the two loved each other and she wondered why they just didn’t admit it. She waved as TingTing flicked her tail and dashed down the stairs, leapt up and tugged the door handle, opening it and running out. What’s she up to? I know she doesn’t live here, but she usually stays here anyway… Halfheart wondered but then dismissed it and turned towards Rabbitpaw. The plump rat was already standing and licking the cobwebs off. She was a useful member of BugClan; timid perhaps, but very strong. She would be a successful warrior in no time with a fearless mentor such as her sister, Sharptooth. Seeing that Rabbitpaw was going to be fine, Halfheart glanced at Smallstar. “Pigheart, could you please fetch Tailwag and Blackdevil?” Halfheart grumbled. Pigheart nodded and ran off. Moments later, footsteps were heard stomping up the steps. Pigheart appeared with Blackdevil beside him. Then Snuggles clacked up. But another pair of feet were making their way up the steps. Since the steps were too loud to be Sunpelt’s, Halfheart stared in confusion. A blonde haired girl appeared at the top of the steps. She wore a flowing pink shirt and American eagle jeans. Halfheart wasn’t used to seeing this girl with such a serious look on her face. “Tigereye? Why are you here?” Halfheart questioned. Tigereye’s serious look broke as a goofy smile crossed her face. “Well, don’t I feel welcome? I come here to make sure Rabbitpaw’s okay and to hear about the outsider and I get a why are you here? Thanks, I feel the love!” Tigereye playfully complained. Halfheart got to her feet and walked over to the girl. “Well, I’m just sorta shocked you’re here. How did you know about Rabbitpaw and the outsider?” Halfheart mused. “Sunpelt alerted me.” She answered before facing Rabbitpaw. The young she rat was now running on the wheel. “Boy, she heals fast! Sunpelt said when Rabbitpaw was first carried into the room, she was practically unconscious!” Halfheart smiled but then it quickly faded. “Where is Sunpelt now?” she dared ask. Smallstar grunted nervously. “Uh, I sent her to fetch ALL the clan members…this includes Dolphinheart, Darkheart, Bloodtalon, Lightningstrike, and Gentletouch…so, she’ll be back in an hour or so. Perhaps sooner if she is smart enough to tell Dolphinheart to have her mum pick up Gentletouch and bring them both here…” Smallstar grunted. He may have been leader, but he looked like an apprentice under Halfheart’s furious gaze at that moment. “How could you be so stupid? Do you not care about Sunpelt at all? She loves you so much so of course she would never say no, but this journey could kill her! You know she won’t stop running until everyone is here! You’re an idiot Buggsy; an absolute idiot!” Halfheart saw everyone flinch when she called Smallstar Buggsy. They all knew that she only used their Twoleg names when she was infuriated. Halfheart wanted to calm down but she couldn’t. How could she feel safe in a clan when her leader sent his clan mates on impossible journeys? Especially when the one he sent was the one he loved most? Smallstar took a breath and slowly let it out. His eyes turned from timid to furious. “Well, perhaps if you were responsible enough to stop getting grounded so much; I wouldn’t have to send Sunpelt to fetch the others! The only idiot here is you, Lindsay!” Smallstar snarled. His voice was deep but loud and demanded. Anyone else would have coward under Smallstar’s gaze when he got that tone, but not Halfheart. “Oh, so now you’re on my parents’ side? I already told you I didn’t do anything! I’m your clan mate; you should believe me over my parents, but, if you want to be this way, I could easily sell you to a fur farm!” Halfheart growled before stomping from her room and down the stairs. Everyone turned to look at Smallstar. His eyes were wide with fear. “Smallstar,” Rabbitpaw squeaked, “will Halfheart really send you to a fur farm?” “Of course not! Halfheart loves Smallstar with all her heart; she is just scared for Sunpelt’s life right now.” Tailwag quickly barked in reassurance. Pigheart approached his leader. “You know Smallstar,” Pigheart mewed, “you really should have sent me to the others homes. I am the deputy.” “But I know Sunpelt will be fine. She is a stray clan cat. She is used to traveling.” Smallstar defended himself. “Actually, she never leaves Halfheart’s property unless you tell her to.” Blackdevil mewed a matter-a-factly.
