A Path to Choose
As Amberpaw dashed across the moor, she thought about her life. Her mentor, Rubygaze, was right behind her. They were running step-for-step. Yet Amberpaw was training to be a warrior, she had always dreamed of being a medicine cat. But, her path led to be a warrior. She had always wanted to have Ripplewave, the medicine cat; teach her about the ways of the medicine cats and healing herbs. She loved Rubygaze, but her dream was to fight the invisible obstacles for her clan.
“Is something wrong, Amberpaw?” Rubygaze’s voice mewed with concern, shattering Amberpaw’s thoughts.
“No-nothings wrong,” Amberpaw answered quickly.
“You don’t need to lie to me, I know you inside out.” Rubygaze mewed quietly, a hint of sadness in her voice.
“I’m sorry, it’s just……” she trailed off.
“I’m listening.” Rubygaze mewed as she stopped and caught Amberpaw’s frightened gaze.
“I love you and training as a warrior, but, but,” Amberpaw stuttered, trying to find the right words.
“But you want to train as a medicine cat.” Rubygaze finished.
“How did you know?!" Amberpaw stuttered with confusion. “I just always dreamed of becoming a medicine cat, it’s not that I don’t want to be a warrior and have you train me!!” she finished quickly.
Rubygaze took a deep breath and mewed strongly, “I understand completely.” As Amberpaw’s eyes widened, she mewed, “The same thing happened to me, I will talk to Cherrystar and Ripplewave about it.”
“Really?” Amberpaw breathed as her eyes widened even more.
“Yes, but first, we must catch some prey!” Rubygaze mewed excitedly.
“Got it!!” Amberpaw yowled, but her voice was carried away by the wind.
She scented the open moor, and the first smell that came was rabbit. Then, Amberpaw spotted the rabbit hopping around. She stalked up to it silently, then, when it saw her, she bolted after it easily with her long, lean legs. She pounced on it and killed it with a swift bite to the neck. Triumphantly, Amberpaw carried the rabbit to a small bush, and then she buried it under the bush. The sun was setting on the horizon and it looked beautiful, Amberpaw was transfixed in its beauty. She shook her head as if to focus on catching prey and not on the sun.
Scenting the air again, Amberpaw smelled another rabbit. She spotted it nibbling around on the grass. This time, instead of sneaking up on it, Amberpaw just pelted towards it, and before the rabbit saw her, she pounced on it and killed it. By the time Amberpaw dug up the other rabbit she caught, it was getting dark, and she decided to return to camp. Swiftly, Amberpaw carried the two rabbits towards the camp. When she arrived, Cherrystar quickly ran up to her.
“Where is Rubygaze?” Cherrystar mewed worriedly. “I know you both went out to hunt, but she hasn’t returned.” Cherrystar’s gaze swept around the camp and then returned back to Amberpaw.
Horrible thoughts raced through Amberpaw’s mind, but she forced herself to be calm. Taking a deep, shaky, breath Amberpaw mewed, “Last time I saw her, she was running across the moor catching rabbits.” Amberpaw thought even harder and realized that Rubygaze’s last look at her was filled with compassion, almost like she was saying goodbye for the last time. “I-I don’t know where she could be, Cherrystar.”
“Thank you, Amberpaw.” Cherrystar replied.
Amberpaw dropped her fresh kill in the fresh kill pile, then she heard Cherrystar’s voice echo across the clearing, “Let all cats gather under the air-tight rock for a clan meeting.”
As the whole of WindClan heard, they melted out of their dens like liquid. Amberpaw noticed Ripplewave coming out rather solemnly, like he knew something. Just then, Amberpaw knew that she wanted to be a medicine cat for sure; she wanted to know things, to call upon StarClan.
“Rubygaze is missing, so I’d like Bramblethorn, Amberpaw, Sapphirestare, and Jayfeather to go search for her with me.” Cherrystar called with authority. “We shall leave now, the rest of you, be careful.” She finished as she jumped off of the air-tight rock.
Amberpaw caught up with the patrol just as they were leaving, and she noticed Ripplewave studying her with a focused look on his face. She smiled at Ripplewave; then ran along with her clan mates. They were running across the open moor, only the moonlight guiding them. Bramblethorn was the first to scent Rubygaze, it was dead ahead. With dread, Amberpaw realized it was near the RiverClan border. Then, with a gasp, Amberpaw saw Rubygaze lying limply on the ground.
“Rubygaze!!” Amberpaw cried desperately as she pelted up to her mentor’s body. Rubygaze was bleeding on her neck; her glazed eyes were open; staring at something unknown. Amberpaw was too shocked to notice the looks of shock that spread across her clan mate’s faces.
“What in the world has happened here?” Cherrystar breathed, clearly puzzled.
Sapphirestare sniffed Rubygaze’s body, and then looked up, “RiverClan. It was RiverClan who did it.”
“But why? Why would RiverClan do that to Rubygaze?” Bramblethorn whispered.
“Amberpaw, are you ok?” Jayfeather mewed suddenly, startling Amberpaw. She turned around to look at him with a depth-filled gaze.
“No-No I’m not.” Amberpaw answered straightforwardly.
Ravenfeather slowly stretched his neck out and gave her a comforting lick between the ears. Surprisingly, Amberpaw did not flinch away; she was too busy thinking about Rubygaze. Tears began to bubble in Amberpaw’s eyes, and everyone turned around to look at her. She turned away abruptly and stared down at her mentor’s dead body.
Cherrystar quietly padded up to Amberpaw and mewed softly, “Amberpaw, I’m so sorry, I know you loved her. And she loved you, I learned so much from her. She was a great mentor and deputy.” Cherrystar nuzzled her nose in Amberpaw’s fur.
Amberpaw just ignored her and looked around, the trail of blood led towards a bush. She got up and padded towards the bush, looking behind it. What she saw was very shocking, and Amberpaw could hear gasps coming from behind her. It was Jaguarfur, a young RiverClan warrior.
Just then, a RiverClan patrol sprinted up to the WindClan patrol.
“Why have you killed our warrior?!” Squirrelstar spat menacingly.
Not even flinching, Cherrystar replied, “Why have you killed ours?” She glared at Squirrelstar.
“Oh, trying to trick us are you?” A RiverClan warrior spat.
“Be quiet, Almondfur.” Squirrelstar spat to her warrior. “I have not seen a dead WindClan warrior, Cherrystar, but here is a dead RiverClan warrior.”
“Then look over here; then maybe you’ll see, dear Squirrelstar.” Cherrystar retorted to her old rival.
All of the RiverClan warriors turned around and looked; they saw Rubygaze’s dead body. Squirrelstar turned back to Cherrystar and mewed, “You are correct, I’m sorry.”
“That’s ok, but next time, look before you argue over something you don’t know.” Cherrystar growled, clearly frustrated.
“I don’t know what happened, but we will take our warrior and leave you in peace.” Squirrelstar mewed as she beckoned Cherrystar a little ways away from the group of cats.
Amberpaw couldn’t help but hear what the two leaders were saying.
“In one moon, meet me at the forest near the gorge.” Squirrelstar whispered.
“Sure, and Squirrelstar, lets make peace, I’m tired of fighting.” Cherrystar replied, her voice softening.
“Yes, me too.” Squirrelstar mewed as the two once-enemies touched noses.
“Come, let’s leave, Almondfur, please get Jaguarfur.” Squirrelstar commanded.
“Yes, Squirrelstar.” Almondfur replied, not daring to object.
“May StarClan light your path!” Cherrystar called to her new friend. “Ok, Jayfeather please get Rubygaze.”
“I want to help.” Amberpaw’s voice mewed suddenly. It was the first time she had spoken since they found Jaguarfur’s body. “She was my mentor.”
“Of course,” Cherrystar mewed; she was surprised when Amberpaw spoke.
Silently, Amberpaw followed Jayfeather to Rubygaze’s unmoving body. They picked Rubygaze’s body up and solemnly carried her back to camp, Cherrystar leading the way. When the patrol returned, all of the WindClan cats were waiting expectantly. When they saw Rubygaze, shrieks were heard echoing across the camp. Jayfeather and Amberpaw set Rubygaze down in the center of camp. The shock of Rubygaze dying began to sink in and Amberpaw felt more depressed than she had before. Amberpaw began to feel panicky inside, like there was a battle inside of her.
